James B. Stere, Jr., 91
December 09, 2023
James B. Stere, Jr., 91, of Lititz, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Brethren Village. Born in Williamsburg, PA, he was the son of the late Gaynell (Morgan) and James B. Stere, Sr. James was the beloved husband of Julia V. (West). Celebrating 38 years of marriage, Jim often expressed, “We make a great team!”
He received a degree from Penn State University and dedicated his professional career to Hamilton Watch, later becoming Datcon Instrument Co, where he worked as a Process Engineer in the Mechanical Design Department. He also served as the Activities Director organizing employee events and fun-filled family activities. Jim was well known for his bright red Christmas jacket.
A devoted member of Christ United Methodist Church, Jim’s servants-heart passionately taught adult Sunday School, and he was a dedicated Usher. Jim engaged in the community, contributing countless hours to the Boy Scout jamboree and Troop 25 of Lancaster. Jim was always willing to lend a hand, offer sound advice or just listen.
A member of Wheatland Federal Credit Union, he served for decades as past President and Board Member. Jim was nominated by the employees and received honor as Pennsylvania Volunteer of the Year, by the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association.
A proud veteran, Jim humbly served in the US Army during the Korean War. He found joy in exploring new places, experiencing different cultures, and creating lasting memories with his favorite travel partner, his wife, Julie, making new friends along the way. Whether it was embarking on road trips or venturing to far-off destinations, Jim had a wanderlust spirit that added adventure to his life. Jim treasured any celebration with family, especially the holidays.
James will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Julia, his children: Jeff B. Stere (Karen) of Neffsville, Jill Guito (Jeff) of Lancaster, Jack B. Stere of Frederick, MD.; stepchildren: Michael West (Annette) of Lititz, Patrick West (Susan) of Mount Joy, Barbara Harnly (Sid) of Lititz, Maureen Smith (Andy) of Manheim, and Matthew West of Myrtle Beach, SC.; 17 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 935 E Walnut Street, Lancaster, PA 17602.

Julia and family,
I am so sorry to learn of Jim’s passing. I have fond memories of Julie at the reception desk at Datcon and Jim’s smile and energy as be walked briskly up and down the halls. And, yes his red jacket emceeing the Christmas parties at the Comfort Inn. A true gentleman.
